‘Junk Couture’ was a fashion show which encouraged the different centres within HSE EVE to create striking couture designs and works of wearable art from everyday junk that would have normally ended up in the bin. Junk Couture aimed to inspire and ignite passion in all, while at the same time subtly educate about the importance of recycling and reusing waste. The show took place in the Moat Theatre, in Naas.
We entered two group projects into the show:
Materials used: Silver, gold and copper insulation foam, metallic foil, cardboard, plastic bags and wire.

Over the last few months, we have worked very hard on this project. Here are some images of the work in progress.

The skull masks for ‘Dancing Dead’ were created out of a template that we sourced from this website – http://www.wintercroft.com. Wintercroft create templates and instructions that enable you to turn unwanted card into beautiful 3D masks that you can build and decorate yourself. This was a great team project.
Inspired by the ‘Junk Couture’ projects that were going on in the art room some of the other participants decided to make their own headdress. We simply cut the foam material into three straight lines, plaited them together and tied them at the back.

“I really thought that it was very good. I loved my character the alien. I had to say “I am an alien! where is my spaceship?” I ran out as a surprise and shocked everybody. I loved my coat and boots. The make-up was great too. The other people’s costumes were very good. I loved the man that was dressed in a suit made out of Tayto packets.” – John Meehan
A lot of our materials were sourced from Recreate Ireland, which has proven to be an amazing asset for our centre.
We really enjoyed working on this project. The icing on top of the cake was the fashion show at the end!
