David Savage has returned home after a voyage aboard a tall ship named ‘Maybe’. We are so happy that this experience went so well for him. He made lots of new friends, learnt loads of new skills and visited some lovely places.
Here is David’s personal account of his adventures on the sea –
We had to get up at 6am every morning and went straight to work on the boat. The weather was lovely and I got a great tan. I was on the boat for one week.
We set off from Belfast and while we were there we got the chance to visit the Titanic Museum.
Then we went to Strangford lough, Liverpool, the Isle of Man and back into Dublin. When we arrived into Dublin harbour the tall ships festival was taking place. We celebrated our return home with some food and drinks.
I would definitely do it again, even though it was tough work. At the end of my training I received a ‘Competent Crew Course’ certificate. I can now show this to any captain and they will be able to see that I know my way around a boat.
Here is a list of some of the jobs that I had to do while on the ‘Maybe’ – Putting up the sails, cooking dinner for everybody, checking the sat navigation system, seeing how hot the engine was running and how fast, anchor watch (which is where you sit and monitor the movements of the boat incase the boat floats off), fire drills, man-over-board drills, pulling ropes and setting sails.
The captain himself told me that I was a very nice chap to sail with and that I was very helpful.
